By Chris Jenkins, Rhode Island Catholic Correspondent - PAWTUCKET — Signs of gratitude adorned the gymnasium walls of St. Raphael Academy on Sunday, Jan. 26 as players and coaches of St. Margaret, St. Teresa and St. Luke joined a state-wide “Thank-A-Ref Weekend” to pay tribute to officials whose hard work and dedication make a difference in the lives of student athletes in the Diocese of Providence.
EAST GREENWICH — As part of their science curriculum, all eighth grade students at Our Lady of Mercy school participate in the annual OLM School Science Fair. Last week, the students presented their impressive projects to faculty and staff and winners were selected, with the top six advancing to the Rhode Island Science and Engineering Fair being held March 15-16 at CCRI in Warwick. RUMFORD — St. Margaret School recently held its annual Christmas baby shower for Mary, a community event designed to celebrate the upcoming birth of Jesus Christ and support women in need. The school community collected baby essentials, including clothing, diapers, and baby gear, to benefit St. Gabriel’s Call, a ministry of the Office of Life and Family Ministry, which is part of the Diocese of Providence’s Catholic Charities and Social Ministry.
RIVERSIDE — More than 500 guests were in attendance to celebrate St. Mary Academy – Bay View’s 150th anniversary recently at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet. Representatives from 58 classes, spanning eight decades, were among those who attended the Bay View 150th Anniversary Gala, which raised more than a record $1 million for scholarships at the all-girls Catholic school in East Providence. PAWTUCKET — With Saint Raphael Academy celebrating 50 Years of Women along with its centennial this year, it seems almost destined that the girls sports teams would do something spectacular. Not only did the girls soccer team win 4-3 against Exeter-West Greenwich for the Division III state title, but they did so backed by an unbeaten conference record of 19-0. WARWICK — Jamal Gomes, athletic director, has announced the addition of Stephen Baker ’20 to Bishop Hendricken’s Unified Volleyball and Unified Basketball coaching staff. Baker is a 2020 alumnus of the Br. Thomas Leto Options Program at Bishop Hendricken and recently graduated from Villanova University as part of its VUnited Scholars Program.
