Most Reverend Ernest Bertrand Boland, O.P., D. D., died on Pentecost Sunday, May 28, 2023, at the Jeanne Jugan Residence (Little Sisters of the Poor) in Pawtucket, RI, where he had resided since 2017. He was Bishop Emeritus of Multan, Pakistan, and a member of the Order of Friars Preachers (Dominican Friars) of the Province of St. Joseph and of the Dominican Friars’ Community at Providence College. Reception of the Body will be on Thursday, June 1, at 4pm, in the Chapel of the Priory of St. Thomas Aquinas at Providence College. Calling Hours will follow until 7pm, when the Office of the Dead will be celebrated. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, June 2, at 10am, in the same Chapel. Burial will follow in the Dominican Friars' cemetery on the Providence College campus.

When the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, launched a Youth Mental Wellness Task Force in 2022, church officials also were responding to awareness of that emergency. “It was primarily reports coming to us from national and local mental health organizations that were indicating the seriousness of this problem among our young people,” said Michael Hansen, who chairs the diocesan task force, pointing to “escalating rates of depression and anxiety; suicidal ideation; and actual suicides.”
