The observance of the 150th Anniversary of the Diocese is nearing an end. For several months now we’ve had a number of devotional, educational and cultural events. This diocesan paper has published excellent articles about our seven former bishops and has highlighted fascinating photos from diocesan archives. And the solemn Mass to honor our patron saints, the Apostles Peter and Paul, is now at hand. It’s been a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect upon our past and to thank God for all the blessings he has given us.

WASHINGTON (Catholic News Service) — In a 6-3 decision June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its nearly 50-year-old decision in Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion in this country.
Historically, devotion to the Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary grew up in parallel, but at a lesser intensity than that of devotion to the Heart of Jesus.
The Catholic Church has been clear and consistent in teaching that abortion is a grave moral evil. The Second Vatican Council decreed that abortion is an “unspeakable crime.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church insists that “human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception...Direct abortion is gravely contrary to the moral law.” In recent years, all of the popes have spoken clearly in condemning abortion. Pope Francis has said, simply and powerfully, “Abortion is murder.”

The Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist is usually celebrated on June 24, but this year (2022) has the rare coincidence of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist and the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart falling on the same day. The Holy See has determined the Sacred Heart should be celebrated on June 24, 2022, and the Nativity of St. John the Baptist celebrated on June 23, 2022.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— The Diocese of Providence’s annual Catholic Charity Appeal exceeded 100% of its goal, surpassing $6.8 million in pledges and one-time gifts. More than 19,300 people donated. The average gift was $338, an increase from $315 in 2021’s appeal.
