About At the Red Mass, the Church invokes the Holy Spirit and prays for wisdom, prudence, and justice at the opening of the judicial year. The custom received its name from the scarlet robes worn by justices in European courts since the thirteenth century. Today, the Red Mass gathers judges, lawyers, public officials, law faculty, students and graduates from across the state of Rhode Island to join in thanksgiving to Almighty God, prayer for a successful year, and fellowship with the legal community.
