Rest in Peace Rev. John T. Carty (1925-2010)

Rev. John T. Carty, 85, Pastor Emeritus of St. Augustin Church in Newport, died on February 3, 2010.
 
Born in Providence, a son of the late John J. and Beatrice J. (Reid) Carty, he attended St. Pius School and LaSalle Academy in Providence. He completed studies for the priesthood at Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick Neck and at St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland and was ordained a priest on June 3, 1950 at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence by Bishop Russell J. McVinney.

After a summer assignment at St. Benedict Church in Warwick, Fr. Carty was appointed assistant pastor at St. James Church in West Warwick in October 1950.  From 1951 to 1972 he served as assistant pastor in the following parishes:  St. Brendan in Riverside (1951-52); St. Francis of Assisi in Wakefield (1952-54); St. Williams in Warwick (1954-57); St. Thomas in Providence (1957-66); St. Mary in Providence (1966-68); St. Matthew in Cranston (1968-69); and Holy Trinity in Central Falls (1969-72).  In February 1972 Fr. Carty was appointed pastor of St. Vincent dePaul Church in Bradford.  In March 1979 he was transferred to St. Augustin Church in Newport and served there until his retirement as pastor emeritus in January 1997.
 
In addition to his parish duties, Fr. Carty also served as chaplain of the RI National Guard from 1955-77, when he retired with the rank of Colonel.  He was also chaplain to the Providence Fire Department from 1963 for many years.  After his retirement, Fr. Carty took up residence in East Greenwich and continued to help out in various parishes.

He was the brother of the late Theodore Carty . . . .  He leaves nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 5, 2010 at Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main Street, East Greenwich, Rhode Island from 2:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-9:00 pm.

A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held for the repose of his soul on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Our Lady of Mercy Church, East Greenwich, at 10:00 AM.

Burial will be in St. Ann’s Cemetery in Cranston.
